Tourism and Sustainability: New Tourism in the Third World

by Tracy Perry, Mar 13, 1998

This book by Martin Mowforth, University of Plymouth, UK, and Ian Munt, Open University, challenges the notion that new forms of tourism offer a sustainable alternative to much-criticized mass tourism in the developing world.

Drawing on examples from throughout the area, the authors trace the concept of sustainability from its inception in environmentalism to its extension into economic thinking, policy and practice. Exploring a number of critical themes, from tourists and their relationships with new social movements to the impact of tourism policies adopted by national governments, the authors offer a broader understanding of sustainability, setting it within the framework of unequal power. Using worldwide examples, but focusing particularly on Central America and the Caribbean, the book assesses the key players in tourism -- the industry, governments, new tourists and third world communities -- and argues that tourism is rife with unequal development.
