Legislative Efforts to Stop Dump Continue

Newly elected Congressman from Cleveland, Ohio, Dennis Kucinich is spearheading the effort to keep the waste site out of Ohio. The Amended Midwest Compact Agreement (the first third of SB 19 was amendments to the existing Compact Agreement) must be approved by Congress to become federal, binding law on the states. Jane Harf, the director of the Dump Authority stated in public that if these amendments were not passed by Congress, the progress on siting a dump in Ohio would stop. Rep. Kucinich is looking into it.

Ohio Representatives Ron Mottl, June Lucas and John Maier have introduced HB 16 which would remove Ohio from the Midwest Compact.

Efforts are underway to keep up the petitioning drive, get endorsements from organizations, door-to-door canvassing, writing letters, and fund-raising.

Cities, Villages, and Counties Oppose Dump Siting!

As of June 25, 1997, 135 cities and villages and 17 counties have passed resolutions opposing siting the Midwest Compact Nuclear Dump in Ohio and accepting radioactive waste from other states. This opposition will make the actual siting of the dump very difficult. In the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois similar opposition made it extremely hard for state officials to find a dump location. In October 1996, the Cleveland Plain Dealer listed the counties and communities that have passed resolutions opposing the state of Ohio's host status. Since then, others have passed similar resolutions. Following is the current list:

Please Help Us!

Citizens working together across Ohio will make their voices heard in state government over the clamor of nuclear special interests. Please join us. We are in great need of people to circulate petitions. (Each petition has room for 20 signatures.) If you want to help, send your name, address, phone number with area code, email address, and the number of petitions requested to the address below. We are an all volunteer organization running on a meager budget -- we would welcome any and all financial contributions to our campaign (though since we are a Legislative Political Action Committee, these are not tax deductible). These can be mailed to:
