Congress votes 230 to 197 to cut funds to the SOA!

from SOA Watch, Jul 30, 1999

Urgent action still required!

In our first ever Congressional victory, the House of Representatives voted 230 to 197 in favor of Mr Moakley's amendment to cut funds to the SOA. The good margin of the victory put us in a very strong position when the bill goes to conference with the Senate. Please thank Deborah Pryce for voting for the Moakley amendment to cut funding to the SOA!!

The outpouring of calls from grassroots groups has made this victory possible. We must celebrate but also take immediate action so that we don't lose ground.

It is essential that you immediately take the following actions:

  1. Call today or Monday to thank your Member of Congress if s/he voted with us. There is a slight possibility that supporters of the School could call for a re-vote on Monday, so it is essential that you do this immediately. Let your member know how much you appreciate their vote, and ask him/her to co-sponsor HR732. To find out how your Member voted, go to: http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-in/vote.exe?year=1999&rollnumber=352.

  2. Although we should thank everyone, we need to especially thank those who spoke on the floor in favor of the amendment. They are: Moakley (MA), McGovern (MA), Meehan (MA), Lewis (GA), Lee (CA), Scarborough (FL), Campbell (CA), Rivers (MI), Kucinich (OH), Vento (MN).

  3. We should also concentrate on thanking those who voted with us this year even though they didn't vote with us last year: Bono (CA), Gibbons (NV), Hastings (FL), Holden (PA), Kanjorski (PA), Kaptur (OH), Mascara (PA), Taylor (NC), Traficant (OH), Brady (PA), Chabot (OH), Ewing (IL), Hayworth (AZ), Hefley (CO), Manzullo (IL), Boehner (OH), Meek (FL), Smith (MI), McInnis (CO).

  4. It is also critical that we contact the members of the House and Senate foreign operations conference committee. Ask them to retain cuts to SOA funds in the final version of the bill.
    • On the House side: Young (FL), Obey (WI), Callahan (AL), Porter (IL), Wolf (VA), Packard (CA), Knollenberg (MI), Forbes (NY), Kingston (GA), Lewis (CA), Pelosi (CA), Lowey (NY), Jackson (IL), Kilpatrick (MI), Sabo (MN).
    • On the Senate side: Stevens (AK), Byrd (WV), McConnell (KY), Specter (PA), Gregg (NH), Shelby (AL), Bennett (UT), Campbell (CO), Bond (MO), Leahy (VT), Inouye (HI), Lautenberg (NJ), Harkin (IA), Mikulski (MD), Murray (WA).

If you do not know your member of congress, please go to http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ziptoit.html to find out. That page also contains the direct phone numbers for each congressional office, but you can also call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
