Sinn Féin Vice President to address meeting in Columbus
from Irish Northern Aid Committee, Oct 24, 1998 Jack Kilroy, the Central Midwest Regional Director of the Irish Northern Aid Committee, is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of Pat Doherty, Vice President of Sinn Féin. Doherty will be addressing the 1998 Midwest Regional Meeting of Irish Northern Aid and speaking at a 1798 Commemoration of the United Irishmen Uprising (November 7, 1998). Pat Doherty is Vice President of Sinn Fein which is Ireland's oldest political party and is the largest single party in Belfast. The leadership of Sinn Fein are currently involved in the peace process in Northern Ireland, where they represent their Irish Republican constituents. He was elected as a peace negotiator in the Forum elections last May when Sinn Féin received 15.7% of the vote. Prior to this he tripled the Sinn Féin vote in the Donegal North East Constituency. In 1987 he was instrumental in launching the party's current peace strategy with the publication of the discussion document "Scenario for Peace." This was followed in 1992 with the document "Towards a Lasting Peace in Ireland." Since this time he has played a central role in promoting and supporting the strategy of the peace process. He headed the Sinn Féin delegation to the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation, organized by the Dublin government following the Irish Republican Army cessation of August 1994 and is centrally involved in our dialogue with the Irish government. Doherty has traveled extensively to promote the party's peace strategy and has met with senior politicians in both Washington DC and Brussels. Earlier this year he met with senior US Congress members and Senators and spoke about the historic neglect and discrimination suffered west of the Bann not least in West Tyrone. He also raised the question of inward investment for the region. Pat Doherty will be briefing the officers and members of the Midwest region on the current prospects for peace in the north of Ireland and the progress of the Good Friday Agreement. Later, Doherty will be the guest speaker at 1798 Commemoration, marking the 200th anniversary of the United Irishmen Uprising, at the Shamrock Club. Also attending the 1998 Midwest Regional Meeting will be Paul Doris, National Chairman of Irish Northern Aid, and Regional Directors Bill Quinn and Jack Kilroy. A press conference has been called for November 7th at 10:30 am and will take place in the conference facility of the Radisson Hotel North (Sinclair Road, Columbus, OH). It will be attended by Sinn Féin Vice President, Pat Doherty and leaders of Irish Northern Aid to address the current status of the peace process, the role of Irish America, and the future of Northern Ireland.
