INA new year's statement

NEW YORK -- Paul Doris, the national chairperson of the Irish Northern Aid Committee, issued the following statement for the New Year.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation to all those who supported Irish Republican political prisoners and their families throughout the year.

"While many prisoners were released in 1998, a great number remain in Long Kesh and other prisons. Our efforts will focus on continuing to support those prisoners and their families.

"Happily, the "H-Block 3" are back with their families again, and the Deportees have made it through another year of uncertainty, even if their future is still not clear. Work continues on securing an early release for Richard Johnson, the last remaining Republican POW in the U.S, who sits in a Pennsylvania jail for his desire to see a reunited Ireland.

"Republican prisoners and their families readily acknowledge the good work of INA, work that will continue as long as a single prisoner remains. As families benefited from the support of INA while their loved ones were in prison, so will they benefit during the readjustment period after release.

"In the coming year, INA will continue to support Sinn Fein and the greater Republican Movement as it moves to rebuild a united Ireland. We will continue to highlight British injustice in Ireland and strive to disband the RUC. It's out sincerest hope David Trimble and his fellow travelers will abide by the wishes of the majority of the Irish people who supported the Good Friday Agreement and immediately implement the accord. As has always been the case, INA will not rest until Ireland is free of British interference."

David Fanning, President of the local Columbus Diarmuid O'Neill INA Unit, also expresses his appreciation to all involved who have been "instrumental in the implementation of the positive developments derived from the Good Friday Accord." Mr. Fanning believes that, "although much as been accomplished and congratulations are in order for the makers of peace, we feel that even more needs to be done before peace with justice can be obtained for a new and United Ireland."

The New York-based Irish Northern Aid Committee, founded in 1971, is a non-profit humanitarian organizations which raises funds for the families of Irish political prisoners in British, Irish and American jails.
