Foreign policy that protects lives in America first

by Rick Johnson, Apr 4, 1999

Dear Editor,

Members of my family and I believe Americans should not invade other countries.

We shouldn't have invaded Yugoslavia, and we should stop the present invasion immediately. The purpose of defense should be to defend and not to invade.

When we are not effective in using diplomacy to influence foreign powers to resolve internal conflict, we should look for other peaceful means. We should provide economic incentives for nations to conform to standards of democratic behavior that guarantee improved human rights.

In the present conflict we should withdraw and immediately give support to surrounding nations who help the refugees and assure they become prosperous by giving them a favored status. We should also offer this status to Yugoslavia in exchange for a change in their government to one that is acceptable to international standards. A regional economic appeasement is preferable to a regional military aggression.

Our invasion of Yugoslavia will kill more people than it saves and make the world even more dangerous for Americans in the future.

If the US Government truly wants to save lives it should also look to the tens of thousands of lives it could save and millions of injuries it could prevent right here in the USA today. It can protect millions of Americans presently harmed on American highways by encouraging more telecommuting (see our web site below). It can prevent unnecessary deaths from many illnesses by devoting more resources to research. It can go after the criminals who regularly assault, rape, murder, and commit other atrocities right here within our own borders. We don't need to send our children and our resources overseas when we have such a great need here at home for increased protection.

We should stop this war before it goes any further. It's wrong for our children to be fighting a war in Yugoslavia.

Sincerely,

Rick Johnson, Founder
