Departments Letters to the Editor/ Free Press Forum Federal cigarette tax hike proposed Have you ever wondered why Big and Brutal Tobacco companies are so aggressive to own and control people with influence by bartering tickets, trips, and tips to them for their silence and support? How could you take a free trip to Aruba knowing you had sold out the health of humanity? Reported in The Virginia Business in June of 2003, “Philip Morris’ relocation means that scores of highly paid mid- and high-level managers, with salaries averaging about $130,000 a year, will be looking for houses, schools and amenities. ( Ref: http://www.virginiaclassifieds.com/biz/virginiabusiness/magazine/yr2003/jun03/relocate.shtml ) Paying $130k would attract the beautiful and brilliant even today. “Employees at cigarette companies are "the cream of the crop" when it comes to wages, Walden says. Cigarette companies are extremely profitable because they take an inexpensive product (raw tobacco) and sell it for a high price” says N.C. State University economist Mike Walden. (Reference: http://washington.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2007/06/25/daily11.html ) Sure BBT has a tremendous margin of profit with no product liability. They just reap the profit and pass the liability on to taxpayers. Great one-sided deal! What if rightfully so, BBT had to pick up all tobacco caused medical tabs? So why do our elected lawmakers allow BBT into the legislative process when discussing tobacco tax increase? Do you think our lawmakers have a voice when BBT is discussing a cig hike? Don’t think so.
