Don't bomb Iran, for Israel's sake!

A long time ago, an elephant named Elie lived in the savanna. He made a daily trip to the pond for a bath and water. One day, he passed his neighbor Brenda the bird. Elie told her he did not like her singing at all which interrupted his beauty nap. Elie decided to get even with Brenda, so he crushed her eggs in her nest. Brenda flew to her flock to seek their help, devastated by her loss. One bird told her, "Elie is the biggest and strongest animal and we are no match for him." Another bird had a brilliant idea:  "Why not fly over Elie's head and poke out both his eyes?" So, the next day, all the birds hovered over Elie and poked out his eyes. Blind, Elie was unable to find food or water, became sick, and died. I recounted the story from a book called "Kalila wa Dimna," written a century ago in Persia (modern-day Iran) and translated into many foreign languages. It is one of many beautifully written stories about animals that still hold in our everyday lives. In case you have not watched the news lately, Netanyahu is about to declare unholy war on Iran.

If Only Some Lives Matter, No Lives Matter

Colonialism is hardly a thing of the past – it’s alive and vibrant as ever . . . from the Middle East to Western Europe to the United States to India and God knows where else. And it can be profitable as hell, at least for the right industries.

In US media, Hezbollah, Hamas, Iranian are usually accompanied by the attached term “terrorist”.

Kamala Harris won the debate. People being bombed in Gaza did not.

 The banner headline across the top of the New York Times home page -- “Harris Puts Trump on Defensive in Fierce Debate” -- was accurate enough. But despite the good news for people understandably eager for Trump to be defeated, the Harris debate performance was a moral and political tragedy.

 In Gaza “now an estimated 40,000 Palestinians are dead,” an ABC News moderator said. “Nearly 100 hostages remain. . . . President Biden has not been able to break through the stalemate. How would you do it?”

Why Are Liberal Zionists Cheering as Harris Echoes Biden on Gaza?

Hours after Kamala Harris gave her acceptance speech at the Democratic convention, the president of the “pro-Israel, pro-peace” organization J Street took a victory lap in an effusive e-mail to supporters. “Wow,” Jeremy Ben-Ami wrote. “What a week! As J Streeters leave the Democratic National Convention fired up and ready to go, it’s clear we’re having a greater impact than ever.” He added that “the vice president’s remarks on Israel-Palestine were perhaps the clearest articulation of J Street’s values from a presidential nominee.”

Promises of "absolute victory" in Gaza are nothing but "gibberish", according to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Gallant's comments were not meant to be public, but somehow were leaked and published by Israeli media on August 12. 

 The explanation of why Netanyahu is pursuing a losing war in Gaza has been largely confined to the prime minister's personal interests: avoiding the outcome of his corruption trials, preserving his extremist government coalition and avoiding early elections. 

Biden’s Convention Speech Made Absurd Claims About His Gaza Policy

An observation from George Orwell -- “those who control the present, control the past and those who control the past control the future” -- is acutely relevant to how President Biden talked about Gaza during his speech at the Democratic convention Monday night. His words fit into a messaging template now in its eleventh month, depicting the U.S. government as tirelessly seeking peace, while supplying the weapons and bombs that have enabled Israel’s continual slaughter of civilians.
