Finishing the march outside the NATO meeting, numerous U.S. veterans of current wars denounced their previous "service" and threw their medals over the fence, a scene not witnessed since the U.S. war on Vietnam.

Free Press Movie, Knocking on the Devil’s Door: Our Deadly Nuclear Legacy

7:30 PM. This film features Columbus' own anti-nuke activist Harvey Wasserman, who will lead the discussion after the movie While the ongoing meltdown continues at Fukushima, this 2011 film gives us information and motivation to act for change. Award-winning documentary director Gary Null deconstructs the corporate and political rhetoric that low level radiation emitted from nuclear plants is safe and that our future energy needs depend upon nuclear reactors. Events at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima remind us that a specter hovers over the security of people worldwide. We need to eliminate the ongoing threat of meltdown, nuclear weapons proliferation and terrorist attack. The US is prepared to give billions of taxpayer dollars to subsidize new nuclear power stations. Profits go to the industry while liability for nuclear accidents and meltdowns falls upon taxpayers. Aging and brittle reactors are being relicensed past their engineered lifetimes. Disregard for safety concerns, falsification of safety records, and inaccurate information abound. Nuclear energy is neither clean nor green. From the mining of radioactive materials to their transportation, from reactor fusion to the storage of radioactive waste, nuclear is contaminating natural habitats, rivers and aquifers while rates of cancer around the facilities increase. Since nuclear energy only provides less than ten percent of America’s energy needs, and cheaper, safer and greener alternative technologies are readily available, the message is clear: replace nuclear as quickly as possible with efficiency and renewables. Knocking on the Devil’s Door features many of the world’s most vital voices now demanding for the cessation of nuclear power including Helen Caldicott, Harvey Wasserman, Vandana Shiva, Michio Kaku and many others. The 2-hour film is co-sponsored by the Sierra Club, the Film Council of Greater Columbus, the Drexel, the Central Ohio Green Education Fund and The Free Press. It is free and open to the public.
